Empty Nest feelings
As we get older and the children in the house grow up, we will be faced with the fact that our house may become empty. This usually happens in our midlife years. It can cause a lot of mixed feelings and emotions in ourselves. It can even make us feel like we have no vision or purpose in life. This can lead to deep depression and other health issues.
Learning to live with an empty nest can be quite difficult, and you may need professional help to deal with this. Yet, here are some practical tips to help you every day to deal with an empty nest.
1. Identify what you want to be
Being a parent plays an important role in our lives. When the children start leaving home, that role becomes less important. It’s thus important to find a new role for our lives.
You can be anything you want, but it’s important that it fits in with your values and desires. By finding different and new roles for yourself, can make you feel valuable again.
2. Revitalize your relationship with your partner
If you have a partner, this can be a chance for you to reconnect with them. Take this time to rediscover and nurture that relationship. Come to know your partner as a person.
3. Explore your own needs and wants
It’s also important to spend time with yourself. If there were any dreams you put on hold, now can be a time to go after them. There may be a hobby or skill you always wanted to learn. Take the time you have now to discover and find out more about your own needs and wants, and reconnect to yourself.
4. Challenge yourself
To help with the sense of loss, it could help to find a challenge to complete. It could be something like running a marathon, or redecorating your home. Having a challenge to complete can be a good way to deal with the loss of children leaving the house. It’s important to not make life-altering decisions during this time. Your emotions might lead you to make the wrong one.
5. Be Gentle on yourself
At the end of the day, the best way to handle this transitional period of time is to be gentle with yourself. You’re grieving the loss of something and when those bad days arise, it’s fine to take time and look after yourself.
Surrender and grieve the Empty Nest
Surrender to this phase of your life. You need to grieve! One phase of your life is over. It’s stepping into another phase. Coming to terms with this new phase in your life can be hard initially.
We believe that the empty nest creates a space for new dreams and desires.
