What does it mean – Finding Your Voice
In this patriarchal world there is so much being said about women finding “their voices”. The premise is that women voices have been suppressed and now its time we speak up.
If you have ever found the concept of “finding your voice” difficult, I understand.
I am exploring what does that really mean? Finding your voice.
Finding your voice is not about talking. We do that everyday of our life. I believe it’s more than that.
Your voice is part of your personality and an expression of who you are is and what you want from life. Finding your voice is a multilayered part of being human. It’s not the traditional – just speaking up.
Finding your Voice is so much deeper than that:
- It’s HOW you show up for yourself.
- It’s taking a stand or position on something that strongly believe in.
- It’s WHO you are in the workplace.
- It’s WHO you are at home.
- It’s strength of character and strength of mind.
- Its purpose and passion.
- It’s connecting to your deeper WHY.
So, you see finding your voice has so much value. It’s so interesting. Now the question how you are going to use your voice. It’s a precious tool that can be used to live a great life. Are you expressing yourself so that you get what want in life? Have you suppressed this precious gift?
So what stopping you from expressing your “Voice”?
It’s that sneaky inner voice that torments us from expressing our authentic selves.
How many times have these limiting belief movie clips played in your head?
- I am not ready.
- I don’t know enough!
- They’re going to laugh at me.
- Who do I think I am? – nobody important.
- My opinion doesn’t matter.
- What if I sound stupid?
- I don’t want to feel like a fraud and flawed.
- I got nothing interesting to say.
- I don’t want people to dislike me.
- I don’t want people to know my insecurities or being judged.
And……all these inner tormentors have become long terms tenants in your mind!!!
Truth – You’re not alone. Really you are not!!! Every person has their inner tormentors. It’s part of the human experience. The good news… you have the power of evicting these tenants.
Now let’s flip the script to finding your voice.
I firmly believe where attention goes, energy flows and results/change shows.
Practice, Practice, Practice. Think about it: If you are a jogger and want to improve your time for a marathon, you focus on running technique, building core muscles, and developing your endurance and strength. You will see improvements over time. The same thing happens here. You build your Voice strength.
Let’s flip the script on our inner tormentors. Here are some examples:
|
I am not ready |
I can always learn as I go along |
|
I am doubting my abilities |
Its okay to acknowledge my skills |
|
I will be overlooked, so why bother |
I am a valuable person. |
|
Who do I think I am? – nobody important |
I am a good person |
|
What if I sound stupid? |
Its OK to be wrong |
|
I don’t want people to dislike me. |
It’s okay if people don’t like me. |
|
I feel like a fraud. |
I can only be me. That makes me genuine. |
|
My opinion does not matter |
I provide a unique way of seeing things |
How you find your voice? Where will you start with “finding your voice”?
If you don’t, trust me the discontentment within you will increase. The frustration and fear will consume your life force, if you keep saying all the things you think you should be saying and less and less of what you really want to say. Also, you want to be loved and liked for who you are, right? How can people love or like you if you don’t show them who your really are?
