What exercises are good for women over 45

Exercising is an important way for you to keep fit, but it also helps a lot in improving and helping your mental and emotional health.  However, as we age, your bodies also change and we may find that what worked for us in our twenties, doesn’t work in our forties.

This means we need to relook at what kind of exercise is good for our body and our age and choose something that works for us. Here are some exercises that are good for women over forty-five.

Aerobic Exercises

It’s important to do these kinds of exercise to get your heart pumping and blood flowing. You don’t need to hit the gym, but something simple like walking, swimming or biking is an easy way to get your aerobic fix.

The benefit of aerobic exercise is that it helps to strengthen your heart muscles, which can help prevent cardiac disease.

Strength Training

It’s also important to do things that will help build muscle and keep your existing ones intact. When we hit our midlife years, we start to lose muscle mass, and therefore you should look at doing some kind of strength training. A simple dumbbell and exercises that aren’t too hard to do at home is enough.

Start with a few repetitions a day and work your way up, but make sure you look after your strength as well.

Stretching

Another important thing to do when you are looking at exercising in your midlife years, is stretching. As we age, our flexibility changes. Stretching goes a long way to keep our muscles flexible and our joints not seizing up. It’s especially important to stretch before you do any other type of exercise like walking or swimming. There are wonderful videos on YouTube that has simple and easy to do stretching exercises that you can easily do in the comfort of your home.

It’s not too late to start

Even if you’ve not exercised in your life before, it’s important to do so in your later years. Being healthy and able to function optimally as you age makes you feel good about yourself, and it will also be beneficial for you as you navigate a new phase of your life.
